MONTREAL - Many Montrealers set their alarm clocks a bit early this morning to watch the royal wedding across the pond.

While some watched from the comfort of home in their pajamas over tea and crumpets, others ventured out to share the celebration with others.

Dozens gathered early Friday morning to watch the festivities at Burgundy Lion, an English pub on Notre Dame in the southwestern corner of the city.

"I'm thrilled," said one woman. "It's the kind of wedding I could never afford," said another.

Around noon, others gathered at Bramble House in Pointe-Claire for tea and scones.

Messages congratulating the Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, began pouring in as the couple tied the knot in a day full of pomp and pageantry in London.

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen, who were invited but did not attend the wedding because of the federal election campaign, tweeted that they were extending their "heartfelt congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambrdige on their wedding day."

Governor General David Johnston and his wife Sharon, who were in London for the ceremony, issued a statement congratulating the couple.

"As a realm of the Commonwealth, Canada joins with the world in celebrating two hearts and souls coming together in the lasting bond of marriage. It is a time of great joy in our collective history," Johnston said in the statement.

"Sharon and I extend our warmest wishes to the couple on this momentous day. We look forward with much anticipation to joining with Canadians in welcoming them on their first Royal Tour as newlyweds."
