MONTREAL - A 47-year-old man has been released by Montreal police after being arrested in connection with the disappearance of Jolene Riendeau, who went missing in 1999.
Police questioned the man all day Friday before releasing him 3 a.m. Saturday morning.
They offered no explanation for the release. Police spokesman Sgt. Ian Lafreniere confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
Retired Detective Steve Roberts, who had worked on the case at its inception, expressed disappointment at the turn of events and questioned the police approach to the investigation.
"I find it strange that they would have arrested somebody if they did not have enough proof," said Roberts. "There must be more to their game plan."
The girl's disappearance has stumped police for more than a decade but earlier this week police finally found her body.
Riendeau was last seen on the way back from a corner store on Charlevoix Street six blocks from her home where she had bought potato chips after school on April 12, 1999 at 4:30 p.m.
Riendeau's family is now planning her funeral, likely to be held next Thursday or Friday. Though they no longer live in Point St. Charles they plan on having the service there, so Riendeau's body can finally be brought back home.
