MONTREAL - A mother that lost her teenage son in a senseless feud over street art can now move into her next stage of grieving now that the killer of her son Brian Kachur has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in detention.

"Now we can begin to remember Brian for the son, brother nephew, for who he was and try to forget this horrible, horrible thing," said Theresa Brochet, the victim's mother.

Prosecutors had attempted, unsuccessfully, to have the suspect, who was 15 at the time of the crime, tried as an adult.

The Verdun teen had set up a trap, along with a 14-year-old-friend to lure Kachur into a graffiti painting session.

The boy, whose name cannot be revealed because he is a minor, snuck up on Kachur, then 19, and smashed him on the head with a brick and then dumped his body into the St. Lawrence River.

He later visited the mother to express his sympathy, while never letting on that he committed the crime.

The 14-year-old accomplice has already been sentenced to three years for manslaughter.

The young man who committed the murder has been described by experts as "narcissistic," and one who fails to take responsibility for the murder he committed.

He had already been detained 13 months before the sentence was rendered Friday.

The victim's mother says that the perpetrator will live a much longer life than her own son got to live.

"I think we'll see him again. He'll get out and we'll see him again," he said.
