MONTREAL - A 56-year-old cyclist was critically injured on Van Horne Sunday afternoon after a car door suddenly opened in his path.

According to Montreal police, the man was biking east along the street when someone in a car parked on the South side of the street near the corner of Wiseman opened their car door suddenly.

The cyclist, who wasn't wearing a helmet, fell to the ground and suffered a head injury. He is now on life support.

He was brought immediately to hospital.

Police initially said the man had died following the accident but later said he was still alive, though in critical condition.

The accident is being investigated.
