MONTREAL - Two years after it was initially proposed, a housing development facing the Lachine Canal is about to break ground.

The Bassins du Nouveau Havre complex will include 1,800 condominiums and townhouses, hundreds of which will be for social housing.

The complex's proposal includes apartments, condos, offices and shops, all on 10 hectares of land adjacent to the Lachine Canal which for decades was occupied by a Canada Post sorting facility.

The old building has been demolished, and the new construction is due to begin this fall, with the first 127 homeowners getting their keys in 2013.

The project will include parks and access to the Lachine canal.

Construction will be done by the Prevel Group and Rachel Julien, two firms with experience building condos.

Pre-sales begin on Saturday June 18, 2011.
