MONTREAL - The Montreal police arson squad is investigating a deadly two-alarm fire that took place early Thursday morning in a Lachine building that had no working smoke detectors.

The fire department has confirmed that none of the smoke detectors in the building were working.

About 50 firefighters were called to a two-storey building on Provost St. near Fifth avenue around 12:40 a.m. with a depanneur on the ground floor and residences above.

12 people were rescued from the building without injury, but a fourth man was discovered in bad condition.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The fire began on the second floor of the building in an apartment and was under control within two hours.
