MONTREAL - Tens of thousands of Montrealers move on this day every year and as a result, massive amounts of once-loved furniture gets ditched onto sidewalks.

Some have stepped into the void to recycle the often perfectly-good items.

They include the group Generation d'idees which tries to keep the abandoned furniture from landfill. They pick up items for free and redirect them to new homes.

Group member Sebastien Boyer suggests people ask themselves before discarding goods, "can you give it to someone you know?"

Alas, the group has to steer clear of cloth items that might be a home to the fast-growing bedbug population.

And some scavengers are not only good for the environment, but are making a buck at it as well.

Mitz Takahashi prowls the Plateau looking for useful items in what others consider junk. He then transforms it into furniture that others could covet.

"I recycle lumber and also anything I find in the street, like metal frames, metal legs and I make furniture from it," says Takahashi.

One man's junk is another man's "all you can eat buffet," he suggests.
