ST. JEROME - A 36-year-old Quebec woman who killed her mother-in-law four years ago was finally sent to prison Friday.

Mariny Chav was handed a six-year sentence for manslaughter at the St. Jerome courthouse.

Francine Coderre-Gregoire, 67, was found dead at the bottom of the staircase of her house in Lorraine, in the Laurentians, on March 9, 2007. She was covered in blood.

At first, police thought it was an accident. A few days later, police confirmed it was murder.

Her husband of 48 years, Bernard Gregoire, was devastated and their son Stephane, inconsolable.

For more than two years, investigators tried in vain to solve the case, but when they dug a little deeper, the whole family was in for a big shock when Chav failed a routine polygraph test.

She eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

Bernard Gregoire, the victim's husband, said Friday he wasn't satisfied with the sentence.

"My wife wasn't just killed, she was tortured," he said.

"Her face was lacerated, she was strangled, and hit on the head."

The prosecution is now considering an appeal. But right now, the Gregoire family's priority is to make sure Chav loses her rights to their children when she gets out of jail.
