MONTREAL - Friends of hard-working restaurant and adjacent corner store owner Sundharam Yogarajah, 63, remained in shock Friday after the Victoria Ave. entrepreneur was killed in a senseless incident Wednesday evening.
At around 6:30 p.m. a man placed a bag of garbage in front of the Tharsini restaurant terrace and Yogarajah objected. An argument ensued and Alberto Manuel Martinez, 58, allegedly stabbed him to death. Martinez will be charged with second degree murder.
The city's 19th homicide of the year took place around 6 p.m. at 5690 Victoria Ave., near the corner of Cote-Ste-Catherine Road.
Athene Carillo was upstairs in her office when it happened.
"I was working and I saw the police and ambulance," she said. "I wondered what happened. I saw there was blood. My boss told me that he was killed."
Police arrived and were told by witnesses what direction the suspect ran, and they apprehended and arrested him around the corner from the scene, Montreal Police Const. Raphael Bergeron said.
Police investigators were interviewing witnesses on the scene, and the K-9 unit was brought in to search for evidence the suspect may have left while running away.
Attempts to keep the victim alive failed and Yogarajah died in hospital.
The alleged assailant lives in the area and apparently has a criminal record.
The funeral for Yogarajah will take place in St-Laurent Monday.
