MONTREAL - Twenty-one people have died on Quebec roads during the two-week construction holiday which ends Sunday evening. It represents a big hike from the total of 14 recording one year earlier.
However the total is below that of 2009 when there were 23 deaths on Quebec roads.
Provincial police rep Chantal Mackels says that alcohol has not been the major problem causing accidents. More accidents have been caused by drivers dozing off or getting distracted by cell phones.
Over 6,000 police operations were undertaken during the two weeks and hundreds of tickets were handed out, according to Mackels.
Border time waits for the many Canadians returning from vacations in the United States were very short in the afternoon as staff was increased for the occasion.
