MONTREAL - The search for a man, 34, who disappeared at Oka Beach Saturday, ended Sunday morning when divers from the Quebec provincial police recovered his drowned body in the water near the shore at 10:50 a.m.

The man was last seen walking towards the water Saturday when others lost sight of him. He was reportedly intoxicated at the time.

The part of the beach where the man drowned is marked with warning signs that read, "danger, deep area, no swimming."

Unlike much of the rest of the beach, the water gets up to 12 metres deep in an area near the shore.

That perilous area of the beach sits several hundred metres east of the more populated area.

The area where the man drowned has been known to be a poplar spot for naturists, also known as nudists.

The search, led by coast guard and firefighters, was suspended Saturday night after nightfall.

The last drowning at Oka Beach is believed to have taken place July 26, 2007 when a man in his 30s similarly slipped into a very deep part of the Lake of Two Mountains.

And in August 1998 cousins Paresh Patel, 19, and Hetal Patel, 26, drowned in a similar area when one slipped into the deep waters and the other died attempting to rescue him.

At the the time of that drowning some questioned whether the presence of lifeguards and warning signs was adequate to ensure the safety of swimmers.

Oka beach is part of a national provincial park which includes a camping area. It attracts large crowds of beach-goers during the summer months.
