Michel Langlois was charged with second degree murder Friday in connection with the stabbing death of a woman in Dollard-des-Ormeaux allegedly sparked by a dispute over her refusal to pick up after her dog.

Justyna Kozyra, 27, was stabbed and killed Thursday outside her building at 38 Brunswick Blvd.

Langlois, 50, and his boyfriend, the building's janitor Luc Tremblay, were both arrested in connection with the crime, but Tremblay was released earlier Friday.

Tremblay told CTV Montreal's Stephane Giroux that Kozyra often walked her pit bull on his property and that the two of them had been at odds over her failure to pick up after her dog.

The same thing happened Thursday and Tremblay called DDO Public Security, except Langlois allegedly attacked Kozyra with a pocket knife.

Neighbour Ayoub Hassan witnessed several confrontations between Langlois and Kozyra.

"I had to intervene the first time to protect the girl from the companion of the janitor to protect her because they were about to go at it," he said. "When I heard on the news about a girl being killed over a dog, it clicked in my head maybe it's the same girl."

Hassan said the disputes were always over Kozyra's dog.

Kozyra was not widely known in the apartment complex, but she did have a prior conviction for breaking and entering.

Langlois had recently spent time in a psychiatric hospital to deal with his bi-polar condition. However, during his brief court appearance Friday, Langlois' lawyer did not ask for a psychiatric evaluation of his client.

If found guilty, Langlois could face a sentence of 10 years to life in prision.
