MONTREAL - Hundreds of protesters met at a spot near Premier Jean Charest's Montreal office at McGill College Ave. and Sherbrooke St. Saturday afternoon to urge the government to hold public hearings on the construction industry.
Some hauled placards, while others stood and chatted calmly at the low-key affair which officially kicked off at 2:30 p.m.
The event was initiated by local historian Patrick Poirier who employed internet social networks to organize the affair.
The September 24 movement, as it is called, has demanded that Premier Charest resign and hold another election. Organizers, however, describe the protest movement as non-partisan.
Among those who attended the demonstration were Independent MNA Lizette Lapointe, musician Dan Bigras and PQ MNA Bernard Drainville.
The CSN labour union put out a press release supporting the demonstration.
Similar protesters were slated for Quebec City and Sherbrooke.
