Montrealer Suzanne Reisler Litwin is a teacher-turned-writer who had her first book published in August.

The Black Velvet Jacket is about a boy named Philip who is coming up on his 13th birthday, worried that he is too short compared to his peers.

His attitude changes when he receives a new jacket.

Litwin says that change for the better has happened in her own life.

"You have to believe in yourself that this can happen. The same way that I always had a true desire to be an author and even though I was a teacher, deep down inside my passion was always to write and to be published," said Litwin.

The book is illustrated by Ross Paperman, funeral director by day, illustrator by night.
