MONTREAL - Employment agencies have grown to become a billion dollar industry that exploits Quebec workers and deprives them of their rights, according to a group planning a demonstration downtown Friday.
The group Au bas de l'echelle (ABE) claims the support of 170 groups pushing to force provincial regulations onto the temporary worker industry.
Currently employment agencies require no license or oversight, something the groups want changed.
The organizers claim that employers now favour the temp agencies because those workers can be fired without explanation, or can hired without worrying about being accused of discrimination.
The temporary workers can sometimes be forced to perform unsafe tasks and are not protected by any union conventions.
The demonstrators will convene Friday at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Montreal office of the Minister of Labour, at 500 Rene-Levesque West.
The date chosen coincides with the International World Day for Decent Work.
