Montreal's major crimes squad is investigating what appears to be a gangland murder.
The deadly attack happened Monday evening in St. Laurent in an apartment building near Cote Vertu Blvd. and Hocquart St.,
Calls flooded into 9-1-1 when residents heard a flurry of gunshots at 8:20 p.m.
Police rushed to the scene to discover a man on a ground-floor balcony had been shot at least once in the upper body.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman in the apartment was taken to hospital and treated for shock, but she was physically unhurt.
The victim is a 40-year-old man who is known to police for having ties to organized crime.
This is the 31st homicide of the year in Montreal.
