MONTREAL - A quick-moving fire has destroyed a vacant building near the Lachine Canal.

Firefighters only got calls about the fire at 6 a.m. Thursday morning, and when they arrived at the scene four minutes later flames were visible throughout the two-storey building.

The fire was extinguished in an hour, but the damage was extensive, and only one side of the building at 2183 Augustin-Cantin remained standing.

A demolition crew will deal with the wreckage soon.

The fire did spread to a vacant garage less than a metre away, but those flames were extinguished before causing any significant damage.

The cause of the fire is not known, but investigators arrived on the scene at 7:30 a.m. to spend the day perusing clues.
