LONGUEUIL - A 34-year-old man was taken into police custody Friday in connection with the death of a woman and her daughter in Longueuil.

Friends identified the woman in her 30s as Emmanuelle Phaneuf and her 13-year-old girl as Laurie. They were found dead in an apartment morning early Friday morning. Two other children, boys aged one and three, were found in the apartment unharmed.

The suspect was at the scene when police arrived shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Police said the man was being questioned as "an important witness."

Speaking with reporters outside the apartment Friday, Stephanie Blanchette said Phaneuf was best friend and "very kind." The two worked together at a Longueuil dental clinic.

Blanchette said she was supposed to give Blanchette a lift to work Friday morning, but she never showed up.
