MONTREAL - A 28-year-old man has died after fire broke out in an apartment in Villeray.

Firefighters rushed to Rousselot and Everett Streets as soon as they were notified at 6:30 a.m. Friday.

They found a fire burning in a small apartment, and inside was a man who had been burned and was in cardiac arrest.

He was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Two dozen people had to evacuate the building but everyone was allowed to go back inside after the fire was extinguished.

Damage is limited to the 1 1/2 apartment where the fire began, however electrical power was cut off to the neighbourhood, so police are at the scene directing traffic.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but firefighters have determined there were no working smoke detectors in the apartment.

Since one person has died the case has now been transferred the the arson squad of the Montreal police.

CTV Montreal was originally told the victim was in his thirties, which is not the case.
