MONTREAL - Montreal police have secured and contained a tractor-trailer that appears to contain radioactive material.

Now they are performing more tests to determine exactly what they have on their hands.

The truck was found Thursday afternoon in a parking lot for towed vehicles in Lachine with what appeared to be hazardous waste in the cab.

The trailer is on the lot of the Burstall Conrad towing company, near highway 20.

The RCMP and soldiers were called in to protect the area while hazardous materials crews and a mobile X-ray unit from the Canada Border Services Agency were brought to the scene to examine the truck.

Initial scans showed that radioactive material may be present, but it's not yet clear whether the truck holds something dangerous.

By Friday evening the cleanup crews were still on the scene, and authorities were taking more samples, which will be sent to a lab for analysis.

Meanwhile authorities continue attempt to uncover who might have been transporting the materials.
