MONTREAL - Firefighters battled a four-alarm blaze south of the Ville Marie Expressway for two hours before extinguishing the flames.

Fire alarms went off just before 1:30 p.m. Monday and 40 firefighters rushed to 850 Place Richmond, a small street that connects to St. Antoine St. west of Guy St.

A three-floor residential building was evacuated without anyone being injured.

The Red Cross is providing shelter for people who had to flee their homes and will not be able to return.

The fire started in the basement of the building, and the damage, estimated at $300,000, is mostly structural. floor of the townhouse, but the cause is not known.
