MONTREAL - It didn't take long for Alexandra Morin-Boucher, 22, to get up to speed in the world of sprinting.

The McGill athlete has been known as a star soccer player, having netted 36 goals over four seasons.

But when she took her maiden 300 meter dash, she surprised everybody with her blazing speed, even herself.

"I expected maybe a 43, 44 second result and finally I did it in 40.43, I think, so it's pretty good. I'm really happy with that," said Morin-Boucher.

Her teammates are astounded at her fledgling accomplishment.

"She went out there and ran and I believe at this point it's the fastest time in the country for the 300 metres. I don't think she realizes the potential that she has," said Sarah McQuaig team captain.

And coach is beaming too.

"The last athlete I saw with range like that was Sarah Ali Kahn who was the top runner at McGill ever in terms of medals earned and Alex has range like Sarah, but more speed," said Dennis Barrett; track team head coach.

Mexican Ana Guevara's women's world record for 300 meters is in the 35 second range, so Morin-Boucher has a ways to go before challenging for global supremacy but she'll be working on doing just that after the holiday break ends.
