LONGUEUIL - It was anything but a silent night for residents of a small apartment building in Longueuil.

Fire broke out in the basement suite of the building at 2005 La Salle Rd., near Gerard-Filion high school.

The family that lived in that unit, along with 20 other people in the building, managed to get outside without any difficulty.

However a woman in a second-floor unit was sleeping so soundly she did not hear the building's smoke alarm and the smoke detectors in her unit were not working.

Firefighters rescued her, then she was taken to hospital and treated for breathing smoke.

30 firefighters were at the building shortly after 1:30 a.m., and the fire was out less than 90 minutes later.

They suspect electrical wires that were very close to a radiator sparked the fire.

Most of the residents were able to go back home without any difficulty, but a family of seven will not be able to go back into their apartment for some time.

The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter until they can make other arrangements.
