MONTREAL - Opponents of the smart meters that Hydro-Quebec wants to install across the province are mobilizing Sunday, holding events in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke.

The event is organized by the Quebec Coalition to Fight against Electromagnetic Pollution and aims to pressure the government to intervene and impose a moratorium on the project.

Opponents argue that the meters emit radio frequencies that are harmful to human health, according to several studies.

They are demanding a commission of inquiry and traveling public hearings be created under the umbrella of the Bureau of Environmental Public Hearings (BAPE), in order to assess the overall project and to review the risks electro-pollution.

In Montreal more residents in the Villeray district came together to challenge the pilot project that sees the installation of smart meters in their homes. They note that 89 percent of the counters are located inside residences, 70 percent in kitchens, which multiply dangers to health, they said.
