MONTREAL- A 73-year-old woman has died and her husband is in intensive care after they were struck by a car in Dollard des Ormeaux.

The collision happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday as the couple walked on Andras St.

Witnesses say a fast-moving car mowed down the pair at the corner of Ceres St.

They phoned 9-1-1 and emergency crews arrived rather quickly, however neighbours said the woman was pronounced dead before getting into an ambulance.

Police arrested the driver at the scene, and overnight said he failed a drug test.

"The driver was arrested on site following the smell of alcohol on him, now once taken to the detention centre they determined that he was under the influence of either medication or drugs," said Constable Yannick Ouimet.

The driver is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to be charged with impaired driving causing injury, and impaired driving causing death.
