MONTREAL - A Laval woman and her five children are making a last-ditch effort to remain in Canada.
Kankou Keita and her lawyers met with Canada Border Services Agency officials Tuesday morning, and will meet again with them Wednesday.
Keita and her family were scheduled to be deported to their native Guinea on Sunday, but one of her daughters fell ill, forcing them to miss a flight.
Keita says her daughters face forced marriages and genital mutilation if they return to Guinea.
On Monday authorities stated that they would not immediately deport the family as it is apparently against Canadian policy to deport people without proper travel documents.
The children do not currently hold passports and it is unclear how long it will take for the Guinean government to supply such documents.
The mother and her children, aged between seven and 20, have been appealing to authorities to reverse a deportation order after their refugee application and a subsequent appeal on humanitarian grounds were denied.
