MONTREAL - NDG residents were shocked when a sinkhole appeared on their street.

The hole opened up on Old Orchard Ave. south of Sherbrooke St. Wednesday afternoon.

The borough has blocked off the hole but has not scheduled repairs yet because crews are dealing with another emergency that is depriving some households of running water.

Officials say repair crews will need to excavate to determine why the street caved in.

The borough's specialized aqueduct repair team had already determined that Old Orchard Ave. was in need of urgent repairs.

Many people who live on Old Orchard and nearby streets, at the bottom of a hill, have complained because of ongoing issues with basement flooding during heavy rainfalls.
